"It turns out that the whole system is in trouble, but you remember it when we wanted to make changes. And in 2010, when dozens of hundreds of foreign language schools were opened, and by tens and hundreds of them, how many of you defended the Armenian language by changing the RA Law on Language? 90% of those sitting here were not involved in the initiative. At the same time, the teaching of the Armenian language in schools was in doubt.

We know what that means for foreign language schools. I myself have graduated from a Russian school and I know its bad consequences, ”Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Arayik Harutyunyan said during a meeting with lecturers today.

“You say the school is ruined. And what percentage of university graduates with a proper knowledge do they complete? You say universities with poor knowledge of Armenian come to Armenia. Students with poor knowledge of Armenian are not admitted to universities. All the more so now a filter will be put in place and everyone will deliver it in Armenian. You yourself have seen that at the last admission we had made a great deal of strain, and many were excluded from the exam.

You say, protect the Armenian language and statehood. We say that our students should pass Armenian and history in schools properly and at a high level, "the minister said. According to him, the ministry is ready for dialogue. "I don't know where you got it from, or I said there could be no concession. If there were no concessions, there would be no discussion. I have said that there are questions of principle that completely change the logic of the law. And, of course, if there is a certain process and the law is based on a certain logic, then it must be followed, ”the minister said.

The Minister of Education and Science underlined that the new law envisages removal of Armenian language, literature and history subjects from universities. “On the contrary, we give the universities the autonomy to decide for themselves. And this whole fight is because you will not be able to convince your colleagues at universities that these subjects are important and must pass. I urge you to invite your students to classrooms tomorrow, ”said Arayik Harutyunyan.
